Letter to Santa Online: Every Way to Reach Him, Ranked by Reply Speed

Santa Wishlist is a parent app where Santa texts back to your child's photo or message while you hold the phone.

A letter to Santa online gets the fastest reply, often in seconds, if your child wants to send one tonight. The slowest may never come at all. It often starts in a store aisle: your kid holds up a box, says "I want THAT," and asks if you can tell Santa. You want to say yes. You also want Santa to write back, because a letter with no answer is hard to explain to a six-year-old. Here is every common way to reach Santa in 2026, ranked by how fast the reply comes, with this year's addresses, deadlines, and which ones actually promise a reply.

TL;DR

  • Fastest: a message or photo sent to Santa in an app like Santa Wishlist gets an AI-written reply in seconds.
  • Free online: emailsanta.com shows a reply on screen right away, and Portable North Pole makes a personalized Santa video in minutes.
  • Surest paper reply: the USPS North Pole postmark. You write Santa's letter and USPS postmarks it from North Pole, Alaska. Mail it Nov. 23 to Dec. 1.
  • Paper reply someone else writes: the Canadian Santa letter program says Santa answers every letter with a return address. Mail by Dec. 9, 2026, and much earlier from the US.
  • No reply promised: USPS Operation Santa is a gift program for families in need. Letters must be postmarked by Dec. 5, 2026.

Letter to Santa online and by mail: all 6 ways ranked by reply speed

A letter to Santa online gets the fastest reply: seconds in an app, instantly on emailsanta.com, or a few minutes for a Portable North Pole video. Paper mail is slower. The USPS North Pole postmark arrives by Christmas if you mail it by Dec. 1, replies from Canada take weeks, and USPS Operation Santa promises no reply at all. The table ranks all six for 2026.

A note on the top spot

Santa Wishlist is the app this site is about, so read the number 1 spot with that in mind. It ranks first on speed only. The paper options below have a magic no screen can match: a real envelope, a real stamp, a real postmark.

The Santa Wishlist app: a letter to Santa answered in seconds

The Santa Wishlist app answers a message to Santa in seconds, which makes it the fastest option for the store aisle moment. Your child says "I want THAT," you snap a photo of the toy or type their words, and Santa writes back in character, by name and matched to your child's age if you add them. Santa's replies are written by AI. Santa himself never says so to your child.

While Santa replies, the elves quietly save the item to a hidden list for that child: the photo, the name, an estimated price, and the store if the app can tell. The list sits behind your PIN or Face ID, has a "got it" checkbox, and exports as plain text for grandparents. Kids can ask Santa questions too, like "Do reindeer like carrots?" The full flow is on how it works.

  • The first 10 messages are free. A text uses 1 candy cane and a photo uses 2.
  • After that, Candy Cane packs run $2.99 for 25 to $9.99 for 150, or a Whole Season Pass is $19.99 and runs until Dec. 31. No subscriptions, nothing renews. Details on pricing.
  • You hold the phone. No open chat, no strangers, no ads, and automated filters check every message both ways. More on the safety page.
  • Santa sends a reply, not a gift. Whether "THAT" shows up on Christmas morning is still up to you.
  • English only. Launches mid November 2026 on the App Store and Google Play.

When the aisle moment hits, Santa can answer in seconds. First 10 messages free.

emailsanta.com and Portable North Pole: free online replies in minutes

emailsanta.com and Portable North Pole are the two best known ways to send a letter to Santa online for free. emailsanta.com shows a written reply on screen right away. Portable North Pole builds a personalized video of Santa saying your child's name in a few minutes. Both replies are automated, and both work on a laptop at the kitchen table tonight.

emailsanta.com: an instant written reply

According to Wikipedia, Alan Kerr built emailsanta.com in 1997, after a Canadian postal strike stopped volunteers from answering the Santa letters his niece and nephews had mailed. A parent fills in a form with the child's details and wishes, and an automated system turns those answers into a letter from Santa. No person writes it, so keep personal details light.

Portable North Pole: Santa on video

Portable North Pole makes a video of Santa talking to your child. You add a name, a photo and a few details, and the video is ready in minutes. A basic video is free, and extra videos and add-ons cost money. Check current prices in the app, since older articles quote numbers that may no longer match.

USPS North Pole postmark: a paper reply from Santa promised by Christmas

The USPS North Pole postmark is the surest way to get a paper reply from Santa, because the parent writes the reply and USPS adds a postmark from North Pole, Alaska. USPS recommends mailing between Nov. 23 and Dec. 1. There is no fee beyond postage, and your child gets a real envelope that looks like it came from the North Pole.

  1. 1

    Write Santa's letter

Write a letter from Santa to your child and sign it from Santa. Mention one real detail from this year: the tooth they lost, the snowman they built, the toy they spotted at the store. That one line is what makes it feel real.

  2. 2

    Address the inner envelope

Put the letter in an envelope addressed to your child and add a First-Class stamp. A return address of "Santa, North Pole" adds to the magic.

  3. 3

Put it inside a bigger envelope

Place that envelope inside a larger stamped envelope addressed to: NORTH POLE POSTMARK, POSTMASTER, 4141 POSTMARK DR, ANCHORAGE AK 99530-9998.

  4. 4

Mail it between Nov. 23 and Dec. 1

USPS recommends that window so the postmarked letter comes back before Christmas. If you are late, mail it as soon as you can and keep a backup plan.

The instructions come from the USPS Greetings from the North Pole page. For more small touches like this, see how to keep the Christmas magic alive.

Santa letters to Canada: a promised reply that takes weeks

Canada's postal service runs the best mail option for a letter to Santa where someone else writes the reply. According to Canada Post (2026), "Santa does respond to all letters he receives," as long as the letter has a return address. From the US, the catch is time: the letter needs international postage, and the program says "We cannot guarantee delivery dates."

  • Address: Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0, Canada
  • Deadline: mail by Dec. 9, 2026. From the US, mail in early November.
  • Return address: required, or Santa cannot write back.
  • Postage from the US: international letter postage, such as a Global Forever stamp on a standard letter.
  • Timing: plan on weeks, not days.

USPS Operation Santa: a gift program, not a reply service

USPS Operation Santa does not promise a reply. Now in its 114th year, the program shares letters online with personal details removed so members of the public can adopt them and send gifts to families in need. According to the USPS press release (Sept. 14, 2026), "there is no guarantee that letters submitted to the program will be adopted." Treat it as help with gifts, not a way to hear back.

  • Address: Santa Claus, 123 Elf Rd., North Pole, 88888, with a First-Class stamp.
  • Write the child's full name and full return address, with any apartment number, on the envelope and inside the letter.
  • Postmark the letter by Dec. 5, 2026.
  • Open to the continental US, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Troops deployed overseas cannot take part.
  • Adopters register from Nov. 2 and adopt from Nov. 16. Dec. 12 is the last day to adopt and the suggested ship date for delivery before Dec. 25.
  • USPS cannot confirm that a letter arrived, and it does not keep paper letters after the season.

12,760+

letters adopted in 2019, the highest number in the program's history (USPS Link, Jan. 8, 2020)

USPS publishes no official reply rate. Still, about 12,760 adoptions in the program's best year is a small number next to the letters children mail every season, and the USPS FAQ is blunt: no guarantee your letter will be selected. If a letter went out without a return address, USPS says to send a new one that follows the rules.

Two mix-ups that leave a child waiting

USPS does not write back to every child. Only letters that someone adopts get a gift. And the North Pole postmark does not mean the post office writes the reply. The parent writes it, and USPS adds the postmark.

Which letter to Santa online or by mail fits your family this year

The right letter to Santa online or by mail depends on what your family needs this week. For a reply tonight, go online or use an app. For a paper reply you know will arrive, use the North Pole postmark. For a reply someone else writes, mail the Canadian program early. Many families mix two: something fast for November aisle moments and one paper letter for the big wish.

  • Age 3, not writing yet: let them tell Santa about the toy while you type, or send a photo of it. A picture Christmas list works well at this age, and a drawing can go in a North Pole postmark letter.
  • Age 6, writing a first letter: mail it to the Canadian Santa address in early November, and add a North Pole postmark reply as a backup so nobody is let down.
  • Age 9, asking hard questions: "How do reindeer fly?" works better as a back and forth than as one letter a month later. See how to text Santa.
  • Two kids: use the same method for both, so one child never gets a reply while the other is still waiting.
